TUTOR TUESDAY: Margie Speer

In this occasional feature, we’ll be sharing profiles of some of our outstanding tutors. 


The first thing you notice about Margie Speer is that she sparkles.

As she shares enthusiastic stories about her work in education and her family, it’s easy to see that she’s high energy, 

It’s easy to hear how her experiences shaped her passion for math.

And it’s easy to see why she would inspire students to love learning.

She’s made that difference as a tutor for Back to Basics since 2011.

Speer’s background is not the traditional path for an educator. Her degree is in mechanical

National Numbers Bee is a challenging and fun way for students to excel in math

While we hear a lot about poor math skills, the traditional school curriculum for math education hasn’t changed a lot over the years. And, math scores seem to be more resistant to change than reading scores. In fact, Delaware’s state math scores for 2009 were below the national average and have decreased slightly since 2007!

Hockessin, Delaware residents Sakthi and Kamatchi Vel has taken this issue on personally, instituting a Numbers Challenge in 2003 and expanding it to a National Numbers Bee.

The use of the Numbers Bee program improves students’ numerical, communication, computational, and problem-solving skills.  It has also …
