  • Back to Basics Company Description
    Contact: Beverly Stewart, M.Ed. 302-594-0754

In 1985, Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. was founded with just a single tutor -- a former teacher with a vision of helping each student succeed. Since success means something different to each student, this educational maverick devised a remarkable concept: provide individualized, one-on-one tutoring geared toward each student’s learning style, pace, and needs, creating ongoing relationships between tutors and students. At the time this concept was not considered a mainstream approach, but it had an immediate and dramatic impact on the firm’s students.

The success of the individualized approach ensured that the firm grew rapidly. Originally, Back to Basics offered instruction in a few core subjects. But as a small and agile firm, it was easy to add new services and subjects quickly. Company heads also listened to the diverse educational requests of existing and prospective students, and specialized services such as English as a Second Language (ESL), corporate skills building, educational testing, and more were added. Today, Back to Basics is a full-service educational facility, providing instruction in an unrivaled 50+ subjects, offering educational camps, providing educational testing, and operating a state-approved, full-day alternative schooling option for Delaware and Pennsylvania students. The sheer depth, breadth, and scope of the services that Back to Basics provides clearly differentiates it from any other educational option -- from franchises, to agencies, to individual tutors.

After over 20 years in business, Back to Basics is completely unrecognizable as the fledgling tutoring service of the early days. Although the same firm commitment to each student’s success and individualized attention remains the cornerstone of the firm’s foundation, Back to Basics now employs over 75 degreed tutors and instructors. Those dedicated professionals have served the varied educational needs of over 9,500 students, from kindergarten through adult, in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

    Company Products or Services

Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. is a full-service educational facility providing a remarkable range of educational services for students of all ages – pre-K through adult. Throughout its 20+ year history, personal, one-on-one tutoring in over 50 diverse subjects has remained the firm’s core service. Back to Basics’ tutors are professionals, all of whom possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, and many of whom possess a Master’s or Doctorate Degree.

The firm also operates “The Bridge Program,” a state-approved alternative schooling option for Delaware students of all ages. The program provides a fulltime curriculum of math, English/language arts, social studies, and science. Students also choose from electives such as a foreign language, art, critical thinking, study skills, computer literacy, marine biology, and more.

During summer months, Back to Basics offers the perfect opportunity to learn new skills or hone old ones with fun, educational summer camps. The camps are geared toward K-12th grade students and include a Math is Magic Workshop, Summer Book Club, and Exploration of Drawing. Special offerings also include SAT Preparation and Study Skills workshops.

In addition, summer school for credit for students in grades 1-12 may also be earned at Back to Basics’ state-approved summer school program. Instruction is available seven days a week, either in the full-service Educational Center, or at another location of the student’s choice.

And adults are also frequently students at Back to Basics. The firm offers corporate education and professional development to adults in a wide range of subjects such as public speaking, English as a Second Language (ESL), and over a dozen foreign languages.

Finally, the firm offers specialty educational services such as educational testing evaluations and educational consulting. Back to Basics principles are often called upon to act as child advocates or liaisons during school conferences and meetings.
