I Didn't Know You Did That!
school subjects

When Back to Basics was founded in 1985, it was known as Back to Basics Tutoring Service, Inc. Tutoring was the backbone of our company. However, over the past 22 years, we have branched out into many other fields of education. We are now a full-service educational facility known as Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. We would like to inform you of some of the services we offer for which we are state-approved and with which you may not be familiar.

  • Make-Up Credit For a Failed Class

We offer make up credit as an alternative to summer school. This 1-on-1 option allows flexibility for vacations and work schedules. Your student can still fulfill the requirements to receive credit for a failed class and get back on track for next year.

  • Original Credit Courses

This program, also offered 1-on-1, is for classes that have not been taken before. It can be used to enhance transcripts, take a pre-requisite course for a class being taken during the next school year or lighten an upcoming course load.

  • Alternative Schooling

Our facility offers a complete alternative to the traditional school setting. Four core subjects, English, Math, Science and History, are offered 1-on-1, as well as low student-teacher ratio group electives for a complete curriculum for your child. We nurture your child by encouraging growth in strengths and bridging gaps within weaknesses. We also offer supplemental services if you are homeschooling your own child and need subject specific assistance.

  • One-on-One Tutoring

One-on-one tutoring is offered year round, seven days a week. Whether your level of need is remedial, maintenance or enrichment, we can help. Once a personalized match is made, your tutor remains the same throughout the instruction. This allows for an individualized program suited specifically to your student.

  • Districts and Schools

Back to Basics has many accounts with schools and school districts. From afterschool programs focusing on math, study skills, writing, high school entrance and SAT preparation to homebound instruction, we assist other professionals in helping children succeed.

  • Government Accounts

State agencies contract with Back to Basics to provide services for their students. This includes assisting those in college with their course work as well as preparing others for direct entrance into a career or field.

  • Translating and Interpreting

Back to Basics offers translating services for business documents, employee manuals, and labels. We are also available for interpreting in foreign languages as well as sign language for meetings, conferences and visitations.

  • Psychoeducational Testing

We have a licensed, clinical psychologist on staff for your educational testing needs. If you have a concern about ADD, a learning difficulty, dyslexia, or giftedness, educational testing could confirm this and provide a concrete diagnosis. Accommodations such as untimed testing, taping of lectures, receiving study guides and technological assistance can be obtained as a result of this testing.

Whatever your educational need, consult Back to Basics. We offer instruction for every level, ages three- 103 in over 50 subjects by degreed, experienced professionals. Aim High!

May Flowers!

The beautiful spring weather has arrived and the blossoming trees and flowers are displaying their rainbow of colors. This is a reminder of just how close we are to the end of the school year. Don't let your student's hard work throughout the school year be for naught. Have a summertime plan in place. Don't exclude high school students just because they have a summer job. Even a small amount of time a few days a week can keep them sharp and ready for a new year in the fall. Here are some tips for the summer.
For any age student:
1. Visit the library or bookstore on a regular basis. Chances are your student has summer reading that has been assigned by school. However, encourage your child to not limit their reading to required books. Explore a different genre or read additional works by a favorite author.
2. Invest in workbooks that reinforce concepts from the previous year and introduce what's to come. This way it isn't a surprise and you and your child will get a feel for what might be challenging for the year ahead.
3. Take a class at Back to Basics! We offer several small group classesas well as 1-on-1 maintenance being offered over the summer in different subject areas. See our website for details.

Additional ideas for older students:
1. Look into SAT dates, consider which one(s) your student should register for and make plans to prepare. Any instruction or preparation should lead right up to the test date so content and strategies are fresh in your mind. Allow three months minimum t prepare.
2. Have your student start thinking about a college major, where he/she might like to attend and begin compiling information for those applications. Pre-planning and having a timeline can alleviate last minute stress in meeting deadlines.

Enjoy the summer months ahead. Travel safely, have fun and keep the academic juices flowing!

Quote of the month: "The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."-Rajneesh.

  • The Origin of Mother's Day
  • mother and child

One of the most celebrated days in the month of May is Mother's Day. Chances are most of us have a female in our life who, if not our biological mom, is like a mother; someone that has made a difference, someone that we admire or simply look up to. This is the day we let them know that they are special and loved. So, how did this holiday begin?
Many years ago, in England, there was a special day set aside in the middle of the Lenten season. It was called Mothering Sunday. Then an actual suggestion to have a day to honor mothers was made by Julia Ward Howe. She was one of the most famous women of her time and wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" after visiting military camps during the Civil war.
In 1904, Frank Hering from Indiana began a campaign to observe Mother's Day. Then in 1907, Anna Jarvis took this to a national level and campaigned to make Mother's Day an observance across the country. She decided on the second Sunday in May for this special occasion. Anna also began a custom of wearing a carnation. If someone wears a colored carnation, it means their mother is living. A white carnation symbolizes that the person's mom is deceased.
Anna's mother was honored at the first Mother's Day service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in West Virginia on May 10, 1908. At a general assembly in 1912, a delegate from this church introduced a resolution which recognized Anna Jarvis as the founder of Mother's Day and suggested that it be the second Sunday in May each year.
A joint resolution was signed in Congress on May 9, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson recommending that Mother's Day be observed. The following year he was authorized to proclaim this special observance a n annual holiday.

You may notice that our "spotlight" this month does not "shine" on a tutor. Although tutors are a major asset to our company, and we could not exist without them, there are others who help operations run smoothly on a day to day basis. They are the members of the office staff. One such employee is Diana Vandenbraak.

Diana interviewed with Back to Basics in July of 1986. She remembers it vividly because she brought her now oldest child (then 8 months old) with her in a child carrier. She started on staff around September of that year and has been with us, on and off, ever since.

Currently, Diana is our small group/class coordinator. She organizes sessions for SAT Prep and study skills, both here at our center and in area schools. Diana also coordinates the summer programs offered here at Back to Basics.

Diana enjoys gardening in her spare time which doesn't present itself very often. She is originally from Long Island, NY and now resides in North Wilmington with husband Vince. She is a very appropriate choice for our spotlight in this Mother's Day month since she has four children ranging in age from 9-21!

Thank you, Diana, for all that you bring to Back to Basics.
