Helping Children Cope with Mid-Year School Changes
Is your child in the right school? Perhaps
you've seen signs throughout the early months
of the school year that made you question this issue.
However, you decided to wait before making a
change, thinking your child may be readjusting
from "summer" mode. Or maybe he/she started at a
new school and a transition period was in
order.
Now that we are almost midway
through the
year, if you are still questioning your child's placement,
this is a perfect time to reconsider. Evaluate and
assess the situation, getting feedback from your child,
teachers, administration, and maybe an Educational
Consultant. If you reach the
conclusion that a change is necessary, here are
some tips to help your child transition smoothly.
- Ask current teachers and
administration to speak with new school
staff.
In this way, new teachers will know
child's strengths, difficulties and learning
style.
- Deliver school records to the
new school yourself.
This will
allow
you to review them and make sure they are accurate,
fair and relevant information is included.
- Sit in on one of the new
school's classes or attend a school event.
Your child will know what to expect and
will be more comfortable with his/her new
surroundings.
If the classroom setting is difficult for your
child in general, and you need an option to a
traditional school, we can help!! Back to Basics
operates a state-approved private school for grades K-
12. Our 1-on-1 instruction allows for a customized
program for your child while meeting state credit
requirements. Core subjects as well as traditional
and unique electives of
interest to the student are offered. Call and ask to

Winter Break Fun!
Children look forward to being home on break this
time of year. As parents, we like to see them have fun
but maintain academic skills. Here are some great
websites that kids will love and still keep those
learning juices flowing!

Another great idea, which gets the whole
family involved, is a game night or two. Scrabble and
Boggle are especially good choices for building word
power. Whatever you do, enjoy time together and
best wishes for a healthy, happy, prosperous new
year!

month: "While we try

us what life is all about."-Angela Schwindt

| Student Showcase...Bernie C. |
| |
This month's student showcase features
Bernie C. Bernie is a 7th grader at a local
private school. He gave us a very candid, from
the heart, interview when we spoke. Bernie
was asked what he likes about Back to Basics
and what he feels he gets out of his
sessions.
He said, "Well, for me, I
have ADD. There aren't a lot of distractions
because it's just me and the tutor. The tutors
are nice, helpful and they answer my
questions very clearly and explain things well."
Bernie also mentioned that the time goes very
quickly in his sessions here. "When I'm working
at home, I think a lot of time has passed then I
realize I still have 20 math problems or so to
do. When I'm tutoring, before I even know it, I
only have like 2 problems left!"
Bernie has seen a great improvement
in his grades and said he would recommend
Back to Basics to anyone looking for extra help
with schoolwork. When he's not in school or
doing homework, Bernie loves to play with his
9 month-old chocolate lab, Calvin. Keep up the
good work, Bernie!
