SupplementingYour Child's Education with Flexible Spending Accounts
Are you trying to get extra educational support
for your child but can't seem to afford it in this
economy? Help may be on the way! On March
31, 2009, Maine Republican senator Snowe
and Florida Democratic senator Nelson
proposed S.744. It is otherwise known as The
Affordable Tutoring of Our Children Act.
This
act would let parents put away pre-tax dollars
into a flexible spending account for dependent
care and tutoring expenses. Each parent
would be allowed to save $5,000 annually and
income
limitations do apply.
At the end of
September, educators from around the
country
lobbied in Washington, D.C. for the passage of
S.744.
Among them was our President/Director,
Beverly
Stewart. Ms. Stewart stated the importance of
this
bill. "In order to provide the highest quality
education
for our children, bills like S.744 are
crucial."
Supplemental instructional
services,
as defined in the bill, are in addition to what is
offered
within the course of the school day and are
specifically
meant to increase the academic achievement
of
students. S.744 would be an amendment to
the
Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The bill would
greatly
assist middle class families, who are already
struggling with tough times, to get their
children the
help they need. Support S.744 for quality
education of
the future-our children!

| Student Showcase featuring...Verda P. |
| |
October's student showcase features Verda P. Verda
is a senior at a local high school. She likes coming to
Back to Basics because she says she not only
receives help with subject matter but she learns
strategies for studying and test-taking as well. She
gets to practice and reinforce material learned in the
classroom.
Verda has seen a huge change
in her
self-esteem and confidence. It has soared. She
approaches her schoolwork feeling prepared and
assured. Verda says she would definitely recommend
Back to Basics to others. It is a "big benefit" and, since
she has used our services on and off over the past
several years, Verda realizes that each time she is
here it helps more and more.
Verda likes
dance
team and cheering when she's not in the classroom
or doing homework. She is planning on post-
secondary education in the field of nutrition or
psychology. We
wish you a fulfilling senior year, Verda, and a well-
prepared path for the future!
