Challenges and Obstacles Facing Teens Today
How many times have we heard ourselves telling our
kids, "When I was your age...?" The truth is, life is very
different for teens today that it was years ago. Granted,
it wasn't a totally smooth road; we had our ups and
downs. But the challenges facing adolescents and
young adults in recent times seem to be amplified
and fed by modern technology, media influences and
intensified peer pressure. Some of the elements that
teens face are:
- DRUGS-Adolescents and teens are exposed to
many more drugs and even simple items that can
generate drug-like effects such as inhalants.
- VIOLENCE-Whether it's through television
programming or real-life situations like Columbine,
kids are exposed to violence. This could make them
feel unsafe and insecure in places as common as
school or
present temptation to become violent themselves in
order to "fit in."
- DEPRESSION-Because of the items mentioned above
and many others, teens can experience
depression. This can even lead to actual, physical
illness.
Since all these factors can exist in the world of
modern teens, sometimes on a daily basis, it is very
important for them to be able to make good decisions.
Self-esteem and good character can overtake
temptation and keep your child on the right path. If you
feel your child could benefit from increased self
confidence, accepting responsibility, nurturing
relationships and other valuable life skills, we can
help. Back to Basics is hosting a one-day, highly
interactive seminar for teens in grades 10-12.
Presented by Joe White, founder of Get Life Coaching,
this venue can provide a place for teens to voice and
address concerns they have among others facing the
same issues. Click on the link below for further
information. It will change your teen's life!

Fun Fall Activities
The heat and humidity of summer have passed for the
most part. In their place are cool autumn mornings
and evenings and very pleasant, comfortable days.
This is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. Here are
some fun activities to do with elementary school age
children:
It's
Me...Naturally-
Kids will get a kick out of creating a self-
portrait using items found outside. Grass makes great
hair, eyes sparkle with colored stones and small
leaves placed sideways are perfect for a mouth.
Chalky Categories-Write categories on the sidewalk with
chalk such as things that are brown or things that are
hard and find items that fit the category and place
them
underneath.
Nature A-Z-Try
to find something outdoors that begins with each letter
of the alphabet.While you're outdoors, don't
forget to pick up a
pumpkin for the front porch or stuff a scarecrow for the
front lawn to keep you in the seasonal spirit.
Quote for the
month: "One's work may be finished some day, but
one's education never."-Alexander Dumas

| Student Showcase On...Kelly B.! |
| |
Our student showcase for October features Kelly B.
Kelly is a senior at a local high school and receives 1-
on-1 tutoring here at Back to Basics. She has been
with us several years to make sure she maintains her
academic performance. We asked her how she has
benefited by attending Back to Basics and what
changes she has seen in herself. Kelly said her
grades have improved and she finds that she studies
a lot more. She feels the 1-on-1, focused instruction
makes all the difference.
When Kelly is not in
school or doing homework she does volunteer service
work. She also enjoys horseback riding very much.
We asked Kelly if she would recommend Back to
Basics to others. Her response? "Would I? I already
have!" Thanks, Kelly, and parents, for your continued
confidence and trust in our services.
