Students took the exams in the fall, winter and spring, giving educators the opportunity to adjust instruction throughout the year to meet student needs. <br><br> On the DCAS reading test, in the lower grades, the increases were generally higher, and as grade level increased, the amount of gain decreased. By year's end, about 60% of students at each grade (3-10) met or exceeded the standard in reading. About one third of students in each grade scored in the advanced level of reading. The mathematics gains appear to be larger than the reading gains. The gains for grades 3-5 are between 30 and 40%. The gains for grades 6-9 are between 20-25%.<br><br> The state's DCAS science tests, however, showed fewer than half of tested students meeting the standard. In the three grades tested in spring, fewer than 49% of 5th graders demonstrated proficiency. Similarly, fewer than 48% if 8th graders and 40% of 10th graders met the proficient standard.<br><br> In September 2010, the State Board of Education adopted a new scoring system that raises the bar for what is considered to be proficient on the exam. This was done to prepare students to compete in a global economy. The state expected an initial drop in student scores this year. Ease your child back into a school schedule by shifting his bedtime back to school-day bedtime and waking him closer to the time he needs to get up for school.<br><br><b>Have a morning run-through:</b> The week before school starts get your child up, dressed and fed at the required time. This will help to point out any problem areas so that they can be addressed before school starts.<br><br><b>Clean House:</b> Go through her clothes and get rid of any that do not fit and replace what is needed. It is easier to pick out clothes in the morning if there is less clutter. Also, prepare a study area for homework.<br><br><b>Stock up on Supplies:</b> Get out the teacher's list and go shopping for all of her school supplies. Buy extras of essentials that will be needed later. The prices are better for school supplies this time of year.<br><br><b>Get all Papers in Order:</b> Make sure all enrollment papers have been filled out and returned to your child's school. Make appointments for needed immunizations or physicals.<br><br><b>Create a Calendar:</b> Set up a large calendar with the whole family's activities for each month. Phyllis is an Administrative Assistant which means she does everything from being the first point of cantact to walking new tutors through orientation to handling day to day and long -erm projects.Her organization and follow through are critical to the running of the company.<br><br>Phyllis was born in Media, PA and moved to Delaware when she was 11. She came to Back to Basics from a banking background and has been with the company eight years. She lives in Delaware with her husband and has two daughters, one married and one in college. <br><br> When not busy at work Phyllis loves to read, cook family meals and go to the beach.
