Back to School...For Adults!
It's almost that time of year again..back to
school! If you're an adult, you don't have to
feel left out of all the excitement. Older
individuals
are "returning to the classroom" for a variety of
reasons. In these unsettled times,
some have been lead to make career
changes. Others find additional knowledge will
give them an edge to keep the employment
they have. Many may want to obtain or
improve everyday skills, learn a foreign
language, get their GED or even
learn to read.
Adult education is not
something new, but what were the earliest
forms of American adult education? It is
believed that
public lectures at Lowell Institute of Boston in
the early 1800s were the first organized means
of adult education. Discussion groups and
modified lecturing systems came about in the
1870s. Then, in 1904, free public lectures
began in New York City, backed by its
Department of Education. Subsequent to this,
the American Association for Adult Education
was organized by the Carnegie Corporation in
1926. As you can see, adult education has
existed for over one and a half centuries. Keep
America's minds burning bright. Continue to
learn!!

month: "Education is the movement from
darkness to light."-Allan Bloom

Student Showcase on...An Adult Learner

This month's student showcase features an
adult
client who wished to remain anonymous.
However,
she had great things to say about her
experiences
here at Back to Basics. Yes, that's
experiences, plural.
This adult had such great results the first time,
that
she returned to Back to Basics for her
continuing
educational needs.
Being in her last
year of a
Master's nursing program, this client's courses
were
at their toughest. A challenging math class
initiated
services with us. Our student said her tutor
was "absolutely wonderful" and she received
an "A" in
her class. Now in the middle of a writing
course, the
student found herself in need of some
confidence
building. She wanted someone to review a
prepared
paper for grammar, punctuation and proper
word
usage. This way, she could feel reassured that
she
was turning in her best possible work.
When
asked if
she would be telling others about Back to
Basics, this
happy student said she already had plans to
send her
granddaughter here as she starts high school!
Thank
you for your continued trust in Back to Basics.
We wish
you well in your medical career!

Employee Spotlight on...Jennifer Ford

This month our spotlight turns to the office
staff.
Jennifer Ford has been on the
Back to
Basics office team for a little more than a year.
Jen's responsibilities are
varied and include sales and marketing. She
also assists with school and district
accounts .
Jen is a
native Delawarean and currently resides in the
Bear area. When she's not in the office, Jen's
3 1/2 and 1 1/2 year old daughters keep her
extremely busy. She loves spending time with
them. Jen also enjoys home improvement
projects, especially painting. Back to Basics is
very fortunate to have Jennifer on its team.
