High School is Over...Now What?
The day has finally arrived. The class
ring is placed on the other hand and faces out for all
the world to see. The tassel has been moved to the
other side of the cap and then...the mortarboards go
flying!!! But what happens now?
For many,
the next step is the standard, four year college. This is
a good choice given that graduates with a B.A. or B.S.
degree are usually in high demand with employers
and often earn more than non-graduates. Even if one
is not sure of his/her career path upon entrance, many
schools will let one enter as "undeclared." By doing
this a student can
explore options and take required courses that
are necessary regardless of the major that's
eventually
chosen. There are other ways, however, to further
education that may be a better fit for
some.
Technical and
Community Colleges- These
schools usually require only two years of instruction to
obtain an A.A. or A.S. Often a student can transfer to a
four year college and receive credit for two years after
obtaining these degrees. Classes can be taken at
night for those who wish to work during the day in
order to save money for further education or just for
meeting everyday expenses.
Professional Schools-These include nursing, computer
sciences, music and culinary schools. A student who
is certain of their career choice may enter one of these
and receive targeted instruction from the
beginning.
Apprenticeship
Programs- These programs are a
combination of classwork and hands-on training. They
are implemented for such fields as carpentry,
plumbing, and electrical work.
U.S. Military- ROTC
college programs, military academies and direct
enlistment are some options associated with the
military. While receiving training in a particular field,
you can earn money to further your education. Some
instances require that you commit time to the armed
forces after graduating.

The End of Another School Year
It's hard to believe that June has brought us to the end
of another school year. But that doesn't mean that
learning stops. Be sure to keep your student engaged
in educational fun over the summer. At Back to Basics,
we offer 1-on-1 block programs (certain number of
hours) for reading and math. These can help with
summer reading lists and/or keeping those math
skills sharp over the summer. We also have small
group classes that include study skills, SAT, Essay
writing and more. Back to Basics is a state-approved
summer school for grades K-12. Visit our website,
backtobasicslearning.com for
complete details. Have
a safe, fun and stimulating summer.
Quote of the month: "The object of
education is to prepare the young to educate
themselves throughout their lives." -Robert Maynard

| Student Showcase on...Our Graduates! |
| |
This month our student showcase does not focus on
an individual. We turn our attention to a very special
GROUP of students...our graduates! On June 4th,
Back to Basics proudly presented its Class of 2008.
The graduates are Juliette Crosson, Hannah
Glassman and Martin Finestrauss. Amid the familiar
melody of Pomp and Circumstance, the students
marched through the standing-room-only crowd of
family, friends and instructors. Each graduate received
a diploma, an engraved commemorative of the
occasion and a tassel. The
graduates each gave their own speech, all of which
were very poignant and moving. We are proud to say
that all of the graduates are pursuing further education
as follows:
Juliette will be attending the Delaware College of
Art and Design. She will be majoring in Illustration and
plans to some day write and illustrate children's
books.
Hannah will be attending Washington College in
Chestertown, MD. She will be studying Pre-Med and
playing on the volleyball team.
Marty will be attending
Wilmington University. He will be majoring in criminal
justice. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of his
father, brother and uncle, all of whom are
lawyers.
Congratulations to all of you. We
wish you the best as you leave Back to Basics and
continue on to your future endeavors.
