Coaching vs. Tutoring: What's Right for Your Child?
You've established the fact that your child needs help.
But what's right for him? This could depend on the
type of difficulty he is experiencing and what goals you
have set. These factors could impact your decision to
choose coaching vs. tutoring. Here are some key
points regarding the two approaches.
ACADEMIC COACHING
- Tutoring can be incorporated when needed.
- The student is struggling in multiple subject
areas.
- Academic success can be achieved by developing
a strategic plan.
- Appropriate when lack of motivation, organization
or discipline are issues.
- Study skills and life
skills are addressed, such as
time management, test taking, homework planning
and goal setting.
- Builds confidence
TUTORING
- Student needs help in a specific subject area.
- The tutor's expertise will be specific in
this subject matter as well to meet this need as
opposed to broad-based.
- Fills in gaps as well as working on current
material.
- Works on bringing up grades and skills in a
specific area.
- Builds confidence
If your child needs academic coaching or
tutoring, Back to Basics can help. Our 1-on-1 services
can assist with a particular subject area or give your
student individual help with long term skills and
techniques for academic success. Our small group
study skills workshops are similar to a coaching
approach but offer peer interaction. They teach skills
that can be applied across the curriculum to assist
with learning in many areas. These are often skills
that are learned for life. Call Back to Basics or visit our
website for more information. Whether preparing
for that Chemistry test on Thursday or learning
invaluable skills for life, we "aim high" to help your
child succeed!

Realizing the Vision
Only 1 in 4 Delaware students who
are behind in math
in 3rd grade will catch up by 10th grade.
This statistic
is from an analysis done by the Delaware Department
of Education in conjunction with the Boston
Consulting Group. In an effort to improve this and
other educational standards, Delaware has embarked
on a mission called Vision 2015. The "vision" is to
imagine the best schools in the world for every
Delaware student...no exceptions...no excuses! In
order to accomplish this, by putting ideas into action,
the Vision Network was formed. The Network is
governed by a nine-member team of
representatives from various state agencies. Area
businesses and educational institutions provide
funding and support for the Network. Delaware
students are sure to benefit from such an ambitious
program and our educational statistics should greatly
improve. To find out more about this program, visit

| Student Showcase...Erica J. |
| |
This month we feature Erica J. in our student
showcase. Erica is an adult student attending a local
community college. She really enjoys coming to Back
to Basics for tutoring. Erica says it's a very good
program. In fact, Erica is a returning client and she
says
that's why she came back. She gets a lot out of the
tutoring.
When asked what changes Erica
has
seen since coming to Back to Basics, she said
without hesitation, "Grades!" Her performance has
improved and she feels much more prepared for her
classes. Erica says she would definitely recommend
Back to Basics to anyone considering supplemental
educational help. Erica enjoys spending time with
friends when she's not
in class or doing homework.
Thanks, Erica,
for your continued trust in Back to Basics. We wish you
great success through your college career and
beyond.
