Summer "News" at Back to Basics
summer books

Do you have a student who will be transitioning from basic math to Algebra? Or a high school graduate moving on to college? If so, Back to Basics has some new summer programs just for you!

Pre-Algebra Course
This course is essential in preparing students moving from the basic math concepts into Algebra. Fundamental math skills that are vital to success in Algebra I will be taught and reviewed. Some of the topics covered include math operations, fractions, percents, decimals and variables.

How to Succeed in College
Did you know that nearly 50% of college students do not graduate? Help your student avoid being a statistic. In this class, students learn how to cope with higher expectations and the most freedom they've probably ever had. Course topics include time management, reading comprehension, learning styles, writing and reality checks.

Other summer programs include Study Skills workshops, SAT Preparation, Essay Writing, and 1-on-1 summer reading list and math instruction. For session dates and costs of these programs, click on the link below.

Don't forget that Back to Basics also offers summer school, make up and original credit courses over the summer. Summer school instruction is for students in grades 1- 8. Make up credit is for those students who have taken a class but have not passed it. Students who wish to enhance transcripts or lighten their course load for the upcoming year may take a class for original credit.

Welcome the "Long" Days

Since daylight savings time arrived on March 9th, about 4 weeks earlier than in the past, we have a lot more light later into the evening. This is a perfect time to be outside with family, to exercise or just to relax. Some outdoor ideas include:

  • taking a walk. It's good exercise with low impact.
  • letting the kids burn off some of their pent up energy from the school day. Involve them in some dodge ball, frisbee or other outside game.
  • cooking on the grill. This is usually good for a quick clean up so mom and dad can have some extra time to enjoy.
Physical activity and breaking up your child's academic workload (school and homework) with fun activities can contribute to academic success!

  • Summer Tips and Topics from the President/Director
  • Our student showcase article will return next month. In keeping with the summer theme of this newsletter, we'd like to share some suggestions from the President/Director about how to keep your child in the "academic loop" over the summer.

    • Encourage your child to join the summer reading program at your local library.
    • Obtain a summer math workbook to keep those number skills sharp over the summer months.
    • Browse the internet for free educational game websites. These include www.funbrain.com www.sheppardsoftware.com www.theproblemsite.com
    • Look into academically-geared camps, such as science, space, and robotics camps.
This information comes from an article by Beverly Stewart found in the February education guide of the Community News.

This month, our tutor spotlight is on one of the newer members of the Back to Basics team, Douglas Terry. Doug joined our staff in the fall of 2007. He has a Bachelor's and Master's degree, both in English Literature. Doug tutors middle school and high school students for the verbal portion of the High School Entrance Exam and SATs. His other areas of instruction include literature, English, ESL, grammar, reading comprehension and study skills for students in grade 9 through adults.

When Doug is not tutoring, he enjoys music. He plays guitar and his favorite music is Jazz and Blues. He is especially partial to the Blues of the late 20s and early 30s. Doug resides in Newark with his wife Kyla, who is a store manager at Rainbow Books and Music in Newark. We are happy to have you on our staff, Doug. We thank you for being a versatile part of our team as you help our alternative school, homebound, group and 1-on-1 students on their road to success!
