Getting Ready for Standardized Tests
Chances are good that your child will be taking one
form or another standardized test during the school
year.
Whether it be DSTP, Terra-Nova, SATs, or general
placement tests, this situation is bound to arise at
least once. Here are some tips to help your child get
ready.
- If your child seems nervous or anxious, ask the
teacher for some relaxation tips or implement some
that you already know.
- Try not to plan any appointments on testing days
and make sure your child is present. Having to deal
with make up dates can be stressful.
- Tell your child to listen carefully to the test-taking
directions and ask any questions before testing
begins.
- Be sure that your child is well-rested and gets a
good night's sleep prior to test days.
- See that your child eats his/her normal breakfast
on test days. Hunger can cause poor performance.
Brain and body need to re-fuel in the morning.
- Be positive and encourage your child to do his/her
best.
There are many more useful tips contained in
the link below, including knowing how test results are
used and interpreting differences in test performance
and school grades.

Happy Birthday to...
Most of us know that we
celebrate
the birthdays of two
great presidents this month, Washington and Lincoln.
Though we don't always look forward to turning a year
older, many of us enjoy a good piece of cake.
But do you know where the tradition of the birthday
cake originated? It dates back to the Middle Ages. The
English would hide symbolic items in their cakes to
predict good or bad luck for the year to come. These
days, it is a sign of good luck to extinguish all the
candles in one breath. So take a deep breath and
make a wish!
Quote of the month-"Always bear in
mind that your own resolution to succeed is more
important than any other one thing."-Abraham Lincoln

Student Showcase... Randy K., Alternative School Student

Each month, beginning with this current issue, we will
feature
a student and let them tell you how they have
benefited from and been changed by attending Back
to Basics. Our first student is Randy K. Randy is a
9th grade alternative school (homeschool) student
here at Back to Basics. He said he likes Back to
Basics because learning is fun. It's hands on and he
can become directly involved in his instruction. Randy
said he has always struggled with math but now he
understands it more clearly. He can also see why it is
necessary to learn math and how it is useful in day to
day activities. Another skill that Randy has gotten
out of his instruction at Back to Basics is related to his
language class. Randy is currently taking German I.
He said he loves picking up things around the house
that have descriptions in multiple languages; most
include German. He is often able to identify the item
by its German description.
Randy sees a very positive change in himself by
attending Back to Basics. He said he is much more
confident, both with his schoolwork and as a person
in general. Randy said he finds it difficult to learn by
just sitting
in a seat which is how many other schools teach. He
likes the interactive approach at Back to Basics.
When asked what he would tell others about his
experience here, Randy replied, "If you want to truly
learn, go to Back to Basics." Thank you Randy, for
your hard work and diligence with your studies.

Employee Spotlight on...Marianne Fitch

This month, our spotlight turns slightly from our tutors
and highlights another member of the office staff,
Marianne Fitch. Marianne will have 10 years of service
with Back to Basics in October of 2008. She started
with the company as a tutor of students in grades K-6
for reading and math. As the company grew, so did
the need for administrative staff. Marianne took a part
time position in the office as well as continuing with
part time tutoring. She is now a full time member of
the office staff, having various duties and
responsibilities. When she's not working in the
office, Marianne likes to read and write poetry. One of
her favorite things to do is attend get-togethers with all
her family, especially during football season. GO,
Eagles! Marianne resides in the Pike Creek area, with
her daughter Ann Marie who is a junior at Padua
Academy.
