College Readiness Assessment...For 8th Graders!
There have been requests made by districts
and schools in recent years to have students
assessed regarding college even before
entering high school. Their concern was to
have some measure as to whether students
approaching 9th grade were being prepared
properly for high school curriculum leading to
college readiness. Enter ReadiStep by College
Board (similar product offered by
administrators of the ACT, called
Explore).
It's not a new model of stair-
stepper exercise equipment. ReadiStep is a
two-hour multiple choice test created from
college-readiness standards that represent
rigorous academic content matter. Some see it
as a scaled down version of the PSAT,
containing 1 section of each of the following:
critical reading, writng and math. The test was
made available in the fall of 2009 for initial
administration.
As with any new
concept,
there are pros
and cons being voiced. Some say it's a good
idea to have early benchmarks to work with so
that the most can be made of the high school
years in preparing students for college. Others
debate that more emphasis should be put on
classroom assessments instead of what they
call "snapshot" tests. Whatever the case, most
would agree on one account: Any investment
in
furthering the education of students who will
be our future is a worthwhile
cause.
Keep in
mind. If you have or are a student preparing
for a
particular standardized test, Back to Basics
can help.

Student Showcase on... Zachary K.

Our January student showcase features
Zachary K. Zach
is a 1-on-1 math client with Back to Basics. He
is a
third grader at a local, private school. Zach
says he is
learning a lot from Miss Keri (our tutor spotlight
this month) and he understands his
work better. That seems to be an accurate
statement,
justified by the 95% he received on his last
math
test!!!
He is more comfortable in class and feels more
prepared.
Mom added comments as
well.
She
said Zach received tutoring from another
service and
he has told her that he likes Back to Basics a
lot more.
She feels Zach is learning more and his
grades are
definitely improving.
When Zach isn't
in
school or
doing homework, he loves to ride his dirt bike.
Keep
up the good work Zach. We'd love to hear of
your
continued success!

Tutor Spotlight on...Keri Collins-Mooney

This month we paired up our student
showcase and tutor spotlight for a team effort.
Keri Collins-Mooney is the tutor of Zachary K.
Keri is a Penn State graduate and
loves Nittany Lion and Eagles football.
Keri is dually certified in Delaware for
elementary and middle school. Her tutoring
expertise is with grades K-3 in health, phonics,
reading, science, spelling and writing and
extends to grade 8 in the math field where Keri
tutors basic math through
Geometry. She is also a Title I
teacher for Back to Basics.
In her free
time, Keri loves
to work on her house and this past summer
she and her husband tore down and rebuilt
their entire kitchen! She also enjoys crafts
such as sewing and knitting which allow her to
create handmade items to decorate her home.
We are happy to have you and your many
talents (academic and otherwise!) on staff with
us, Keri!
