Extra Credit Provides Extra Opportunity
We all liked extra credit in school. It was
an opportunity to improve whatever grades we
received on tests or for a
class. That same potential for improvement exists
when it comes to "extra" high school credits as well.
Here's how.
The national average for high
school credits earned is 26. Currently, in Delaware,
the minimum number of credits
required to graduate is 22. This is, as you can see,
below the previously stated average. Students may not
be
viewed as equally competitive for college acceptance
with a lower number of credits. Even with plans to
increase the minimum to 24 by adding mandatory
world language credits for 2011-2012 freshman,
Delaware still falls short. Back to Basics can help!
(More detailed information on graduation
requirements can be found on the DE Dept of
Education website under "students and families.")
Back to Basics offers state-approved
courses for original
high school
credit. This means that a student can take a 1-on-1
course
not taken before and receive credit. The student's
school needs to acknowledge that it will accept credit
for the course taken. Number of hours required and a
syllabus showing material to be covered should be
provided, as well as a text, if possible. Upon
completion of the course, a report will be issued to the
school stating hours of instruction, topics covered and
grade earned.
Course loads for
the school year can be lightened or transcripts
enhanced by obtaining extra credits. This can
definitely improve a student's chance of getting into
the college of their choice. Don't wait. Contact Back to
Basics now to find out more about this great
opportunity!

Helping Johnny To Read
Many children, and adults for that matter, have difficulty
reading. There are specialized programs to
assist non-readers and poor readers to improve their
literacy level. Here are a couple of helpful programs
that you may not be familiar with:
Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes-
The programs in this method have
been effective with symptoms of dyslexia, hyperlexia,
autism and general learning disabilities. They target
the basic sensory functions that are related to learning
and stimulate them. These programs include, but are
not limited to, Talkies, Seeing Stars, and Lindamood
Phoneme Sequencing.
Orton-Gillingham-This
methodology was developed by Dr. Samuel Orton and
an educator, Anna Gillingham. It puts emphasis on
visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles and
uses phonetics. It is a multi-sensory approach to
reading. Orton-Gillingham begins with the structure of
language and teaches reading, handwriting and
written expression as a logical all-encompassing
body. This comprehensive approach benefits a
majority of students, if not all.
Of course,
catching a reading difficulty early is key. Observe your
children and seek help at the first sign of trouble. This
gives you the best chance of success no matter what
program you choose. We also have psychologists on
staff to do psychoeducational testing.

not preparation for life; education is life itself."-John

| Student Showcase on...Ryan T. |
| |
This month we'd like to showcase one of our adult
students, Ryan. Ryan is a one-on-one tutoring client
and has used Back to Basics' services for over five
years. He said that one thing he likes about Back to
Basics is that the tutors are very knowledgeable and
professional. He gets great satisfaction from the
service he receives.
As an apprentice with
the carpentry union, he encounters much math. He
keeps coming back for help as needed, especially
with higher level courses, because he sees
consistent improvement in his grades. When Ryan
isn't working or studying he likes to work out. Ryan
adds that he would recommend Back to Basics to
anyone seeking educational help. He said he will
continue coming back himself as long as he needs
assistance. Thank you, Ryan, for your display of trust
in Back to Basics.
