August tutor spotlight on… Julie Nichols

August’s spotlight shines on tutor Julie Nichols. Julie has been part of the Back to Basics team for over two years. She is certified in elementary education. Julie’s subject matter includes adult literacy, basic math, ESL, general science, geography, history, phonics, reading, social studies, vocabulary and writing. She also instructs students in the verbal portion of the high school entrance, Praxis, and SAT exams. Julie is certified in the Orton-Gillingham and Wilson reading programs.

When Julie isn’t working, she especially loves gardening, as well as hiking and reading. Julie was born and raised in Northwestern Pennsylvania. She then taught in the shore area of Southern New Jersey. She is a four-year resident of Delaware, currently residing in North Wilmington. Julie has three grown children who live in various cities along the east coast. Thank you, Julie, for your dedication and commitment to your students and helping them succeed.

Helping fight childhood cancer

The Kids’s Runway for Research will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the DuPont Country Club. It will benefit the Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research (NCCCR). The facility has been in existence for three years and is the only pediatric cancer research facility in Delaware.

The main event will be a fashion show featuring models ages 5-18 that are childhood cancer survivors. A light lunch will be served and there will be a silent auction. Vendors will be attending, giving demonstrations and having their merchandise available for purchase. Kids’ activities will include face painting and a balloon artist. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids, and can be purchased at the door. Come out for a day of fun and support a great cause as well!

Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. recently received approval from the Delaware Department of Education as a state-certified Private Business and Trade School.   A variety of essential business and trade courses will be offered as part of the curriculum with specialized, one-on-one instruction to adult students.

Back to Basics founder addresses national education conference

Beverly Stewart, founder of Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, Inc. was recently asked to speak at the 2010 EDventures Conference in Chicago. The 2010 conference celebrated the organization 20th anniversary, bringing together providers of private education services, charter schools, investors, and others who are stakeholders in private education.

“I was incredibly honored to be asked to speak at the annual event,” says Beverly Stewart. “This is the 10th year I have addressed a group of my peers from around the globe and each year I marvel at the level of dedication and commitment that is exhibited to improving the quality of education. Tutor Spotlight on… Sharon Wilk

Our July tutor spotlight is on Sharon Wilk. Sharon tutors some of our youngest students, grades Pre-K through 3, in math, language arts, phonics, reading, Reading Assist, and special ed. She is one of our non-public Title I instructors as well. Sharon is certified in DE and NJ for special education.

Sharon was born and raised in Delaware. After obtaining her teaching degree, she accepted a position in New Jersey where she spent three years. Then it was back to Delaware. Sharon attended grad school at Drexel before her husband’s employment took them both to California. After residing there for three years, it was back to Delaware, which is now home.

Sharon has four children, ranging in age from 13-24. When she’s not teaching or busy with family, her absolute favorite thing to do is volunteer work. Sharon also enjoys, cooking, baking, gardening and her dogs which she walks two to four miles a day!

Tutor Spotlight on… Mark Paullin

Mark PaullinOur spotlight for June shines on Mark Paullin. Mark tutors 7th grade-adult students in a variety of mathematics, including Algebra I & II, basic math, Calculus, Integrated math, Pre-Algebra, Pre- Calculus, Probability and Statistics. He rounds out his subject areas with Italian and Psychology.

Mark enjoys going to concerts in his free time. Now that the warmer weather is upon us, he also likes being at the beach. Mark is originally from South Jersey and then resided in PA while getting his undergraduate degree. He now calls Delaware home and is a newlywed of two months. In fact, Mark and Jayme’s wedding was featured on the June 13th episode of “My Fair Wedding” on Women’s Entertainment TV!

Both Mark and his wife are very commited to furthering their education. Mark is in his second year of a master’s program at St. Joseph’s University. Jayme is pursuing her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of DE.
