Delaware’s State ESSA Plan is the nation’s first to receive approval by US Secretary of Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently announced the approval of Delaware’s consolidated state plan under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Delaware is the first plan advanced to DeVos for review and approval.

“Delaware has always been a state of firsts, so it should be no surprise that theirs was both the first state plan submitted and the first approved under ESSA,” said Secretary DeVos.

Delaware was the first of 16 states and the District of Columbia to opt to submit their complete consolidated state plan by the first deadline on April 3. The comprehensive plan includes feedback from two previous drafts created during months of public input, including community conversations across the state, discussion groups, the Governor’s ESSA Advisory Committee, online surveys and stakeholder meetings including prominent education experts such as Back to Basics Founder Beverly Stewart, M.Ed.

What does the new ESSA Plan mean for Delaware students?
Unlike the No Child Left Behind law that it replaces, the Every Student Succeeds Act allows for more flexibility in how states distribute funds, and other measures. One of the biggest changes is the increased flexibility — and power — given to states when intervening in the lowest performing schools. Options may include receiving additional federal funding or even direct intervention.
