Delaware drop-out rate declines for second consecutive year

Good news for Delawareans! According to the Delaware Department of Education’s latest release, the drop-out rates across the state continues to decline.

The report shows that only 547 students, out of 40,287 public school students enrolled in grades 9 to 12, dropped out of school in the 2015-2016 school year. At a rate of 1.4 percent, that is a substantial decrease from the previous year’s rate of 2.2 percent.

And, it’s the lowest drop-out rate in the state in more than 30 years!

“I am proud of the families, educators and community partners who work together throughout the year to provide students — especially those identified as being at risk for leaving school — with the supports they need in and out of the school day so they can complete their educations,” Secretary of Education Susan Bunting recently said.

However, even a drop-out rate of 1.4 percent is too high. Students cited many reasons for choosing to leave school. However, leaving school before graduation sets these children up for great challenges in life.
