How to study for the SAT

how-to-prepare-for-the-satSAT scores aren’t generally the only deciding factor for getting into college, but they do matter more to some colleges than others, according to Peterson’s, one of the most accurate sources for admissions information. In fact, the National Association for College Admission Counseling found that larger institutions tend to consider test scores more intently, while small exclusive schools are likely to place equal importance on all aspects of your application.

The New SAT for 2016

The SAT is the benchmark standardized assessment of the critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills students have developed over time and that they need to be successful in college and career.  Each year, more than two million students take the SAT.

In 2016, the SAT underwent its biggest change in 30 years. The New SAT, which made its debut in March 2016, includes numerous changes moving the SAT to an exam that more closely reflects what students are learning in high school. The new SAT also reflects what student will learn when they get to college.

Changes to the SAT for 2016

  • The vocabulary section has been eliminated.
  • The essay is now optional.
  • Calculators will no longer be allowed during some portions of the math section.
  • The number of answers to choose from in each question has been cut from five to four.
  • Students will no longer be penalized for guessing.
  • The new exam is a more “text-based test” than the previous version (with more dense text in both the reading and math sections).

The Benefits of SAT Test Prep

While scoring a perfect 1600 on the SAT won’t guarantee acceptance into your dream school, it sure can help. But, how do students even work towards such an elusive goal? Practice books and classroom practice questions can help.  But, the most effective way to prepare for the SAT is through 1-on-1 SAT prep!

Becoming familiar with the types of questions that will be asked, the test structure, and what the test is designed to measure will dramatically reduce anxiety and improve performance. And, at Back to Basics Learning Dynamics in Wilmington, Delaware, we know the newly revised SAT test — inside and out. And, unlike large, generic “SAT prep classes” or “SAT Prep courses” our experienced tutors work 1-on-1 with students in both Critical Reading and Mathematics to focus on those specific areas needed by each student.

While we certainly can’t guarantee a perfect score, we can guarantee that students will strengthen their knowledge, reduce anxiety, and build confidence. They will learn strategies specific to the test, timing techniques and have the opportunity to take and review practice tests.

Two prep packages are available based on whether the student is taking the test for the first time or needs to improve a certain section of the test, based on his or her previous scores. To learn more about 1-on-1 SAT Prep in Wilmington, Delaware, please contact Back to Basics at 302-594-0754.
