How to combat the high cost of college tuition

Girl WalkingSaranac Hale Spencer of the News Journal recently reported, “The University of Delaware is raising tuition and fees by more than 2 percent for the upcoming school year, a move that comes as the cost of higher education has become a central part of a national political debate.”

How can parents combat the rising cost of a college education? In a word: scholarships.

In addition to scholarships for sports, music, and art, most colleges offer scholarships directly tied to SAT and ACT scores. Here are just a few examples:

At Baylor University in Waco, Texas, students can earn more than $40,000, based on test scores:

SAT Score (M + CR)         ACT Score            Amount per year

1500 +                                   36                           $40,360

1400-1490                            33-35                     $39,360

1300-1390                            30-32                     $38,360

Below 1300                         29 and below     $36,360

Louisiana State University has three scholarships based on test scores

SAT Score (M + CR)         ACT Score            Amount per year

1440                                       33                           $20,500 (out of state)

1330                                       30                           $15,500 (out of state)

1250                                       28                           $ 7,600 (out of state)

And, Texas Tech University offers automatic guaranteed scholarships such as:

SAT Score (M + CR)         ACT Score            Amount per year

1400                                       32                           $6,000

1300                                       29                           $4,000

1250                                       28                           $3,500

Parents should note that one-point ACT increases and 50-point SAT increases can increase a scholarship by thousands of dollars over the course of four years! And, these are just a few examples!

At Back to Basics Learning Dynamics in Wilmington, Delaware, we know the newly revised SAT test — inside and out. And, unlike large, generic “SAT prep classes” or “SAT Prep courses” our experienced tutors work 1-on-1 with students in both Critical Reading and Mathematics to focus on those specific areas needed by each student.

While we certainly can’t guarantee a perfect score, we can guarantee that students will strengthen their knowledge, reduce anxiety, and build confidence every step of the way! They will learn strategies specific to the test, timing techniques and have the opportunity to take and review practice tests.

Here’s what folks have to say about Back to Basics’ 1-on-1 SAT prep in Delaware:

“After the PSAT, Christine was devastated. We knew she had a long way to go if she wanted to receive an acceptance to her dream college. Her tutors worked to help her overcome her anxiety and timing issues and she was diligent in completing all of her “homework” assignments. She took the test once and received a score of 2300 [combined score used for three subject areas in the 2015 test]. She also received her coveted acceptance to Georgetown University! Her SAT score absolutely pushed her over the top and it would not have been possible without Back to Basics!” —Susan McNeill

“I was so pleased with my daughter’s experience with Back to Basics tutoring for the SAT. My daughter improved her score in Math SAT from the PSAT by over 200 points. Not only was she instructed in the math skills she needed to improve her score, but she also was instructed in general test taking strategies which helped in all of the sections of the test. I highly recommend Back to Basics SAT tutoring.”  — Sheila Mangan

“Joy’s [SAT] scores went up almost 200 points in the short time Bob worked with her, and she got her Writing and English scores up to a level that she had good choices for colleges. She was just accepted at Syracuse in the Economics department. Your help in getting us help for her at the 11th hour helped make that possible.” —Kathy Steiner

Summer is the perfect opportunity to begin working on SAT prep for rising juniors, who will take the test for the first time. It is also helpful for rising seniors, who still may take the SAT in the fall, just before submitting college applications.
