How to boost recent college grads’ resumes?

Student achievementThis summer, tens of thousands of college graduates will pound the pavement in search of the perfect job, joining an already overburdened workforce. Unfortunately, the statistics are not encouraging. Millions of college graduates suffer a mismatch between education and employment and will become unemployed or severely underemployed.

So, how does the recent college grad stand out from the crowd? In a word: skills.

Sometimes, all that’s really needed are some valuable skills to tip the scales in a college grad’s favor. For example, take the case of your average English major. Although this grad may have stellar communications skills (having written dozens of papers over the course of four years!) he may not have crucial computer program knowledge. A quick refresher in Excel or common database programs will boost the skills section of his resume and help him merge into office life seamlessly.

Conversely, the Economics major may have avoided many writing courses. Assistance with basic business writing will not only add extra polish to a resume and cover letter, but will help this grad through his career, since the ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner is crucial at all levels of business.

Or, brushing up on a foreign language can add cache and help a job seekers resume rise to the top of the pile. If high school Spanish is all but a distant memory, a quick refresher will lend credence to the claim that a grad is “fluent” in a foreign language.
